I would like to say a couple of things about Mark, although I did not know him that well, he seemed like a very outgoing person. He was always there to talk if you needed to. He gave his life to help people. I met Mark because of his younger brother Brandon. Brandon looked up to him just as any younger brother looked up to his older brother. We will all miss him. His life was ended too short.

The Applebee's crew would like to send out our sincerest sympathy for Mark's family, it was very sad to hear of such a violent and shameful tragedy. Mark was a very giving young man with such a promising future we are so sorry for your loss as he will be missed.

Please allow me to introduce myself; I am Terry Merrell, the Fire Chief of the City of Maplewood Fire Department in Saint Louis County Missouri. Last July one of my Firefighters, Ryan A. Hummert, was tragically shot and killed while preparing to extinguish a car fire. It was an ambush and was cold blooded murder. He had only been with our department for 10 months and was 22 years old.

Please accept my most sincere condolences. This is truly the most difficult time you and your department will face. Know that our prayers are with you, your department, and Mark's family. We know what you are going through and know how incredibly devastated you feel.

I know there is very little anyone can do. Please contact me if you can think of any assistance I can offer.

City of Maplewood Fire Department
Maplewood, MO 63143

From the bottom of my heart I express a deep sadness at the tragic loss of Brother Davis. Those who give so much for nothing are often taken from us at a moments notice. I know Mark really cared so much for his fellow human beings and was proud of his service to everyone. After 30 some-odd years in this business I can never understand why things like this happen. My deepest sympathies to the Davis family and to my fellow EMTs and firefighters who have suffered such a terrible tragedy.  May God bless all of you.

The Croghan Fire Department and Ambulance Service would like to send out sincere sympathy to the family and fellow EMT's of Mark  Davis.  Our department is far enough away that we did not have the chance to work along side of Mark....We think that it is just terrible that such a young and talented life would be taken so soon by someone so careless. We would like to send our condolences to everyone in the department and we know that there is another EMT angel looking upon us.

These aren't the best pics, but my grandson Braxton Levi Jelley is a very lively little guy. Braxton Levi loved Mark, but everyone in our family loved Mark. Mark is very special to my whole family..... we will always love him dearly. My grandson is very shy but Mark became Braxton's uncle in the long but very short run the very day they met and I will make sure Braxton will always know how wonderful of a person his "Uncle Mark" was to all of us! I truly thank God that my son Joseph's and Mark's roads crossed and he became such an important part of our family.

Mark's mother told me so many wonderful things today, but one thing she said to me was, "our children are only on loan to us," I will never forget that and she told me she had the most wonderful 25 wonderful years of her life with her beautiful son Mark!

God bless and our prayers will always be with everyone that lost such a special piece of their lives today.

I wanted to send my condolences for the loss of one of your Cape Vincent Fire and TIERS  family. I am recently retired as an AEMT-CC and I serve on REMSCO as an  ER RN.   My heart sank as I saw this on the news.  Words are never enough for your grieving and to have to have happened when your Rescue was serving a call.  Hopefully in time your hurt will begin to heal.  Christmas of '07, our ER lost a nurse in an horrific accident.  Connie had also been a terrific AEMT-CC and we often crossed lines to help each other.   The hole was great for such along time but with all of us pulling together it has made a difference.  I hope for  you all too to remember and cherish the good times and talk to each other -keeping the lines of communication always open and watch out for each other.  Even though the rest of us may have not known Mark personally, he is one of us and we in EMS will grieve along with you at the loss of a brother.

Thinking of all of you --

Carol Muench

This is definitely a great loss to the Jefferson County Community. I  send my sincere condolences to Mark's family, friends and fellow firefighters and EMT's.

I've known Mark for very many years--he worked for me many years and was a very hard worker and dedicated to what he was doing. And what he choose in life was to help people in times of need. He was like a son to me and would talk to me about personal things. I am very sad about this--he was so young and had a lot to offer to society. It is just so bad that one person...can take someone's life in a instant. Well, I am just in shock .

Love and will miss you Mark.

Gordon and Marcy Richmond

Please accept our condolences from the Men and Women of the Spencerport Firemen’s Association and The Spencerport Fire District.  It was a heinous and cowardly act.  We will hold Mark and his family in our hearts and prayers.

A Memorial Poem

Gone But Not Forgotten

Friend, when you weep for me
Remember that it was meant to be
Lay me down and when you leave
Remember I'll be at your sleeve
In every dark and choking hall
I'll be there as you slowly crawl
On every roof in a driving snow
I'll hold your coat and you will know
In cellars hot with searing heat
At  windows where a gate you meet
In closets where young children hide
You know I'll be there at your side
The house from which I now respond
Is overstaffed with heroes gone
Those who answered one last bell
Did the job and did it well
As firefighters we understand
That death's a card delt in our hand
A card we hope we never play
But one we hold there anyway
That card is something we ignore
As we crawl across a weakened floor
For we know that we're the only prayer
For anyone that might be there
So remember as you wipe your tears
The joy I knew throughout the years
As I did my job I loved to do
I pray that thought will see you through

The Officers and members of the Speculator Volunteer Ambulance Corps in Hamilton County, NY wish to express their deep condolences to the family, loved ones and co-workers of EMT Mark Davis.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark's family--what a tragedy.   Undoubtedly, this was an exceptional young man who gave of himself to  serve others.  May he be borne up on angel's wings.

To Entire Community of Cape Vincent

My wife and I, Mark's Grandmother and Grandfather, knew of Mark's dedication to the EMT and paramedic programs and felt he was on a great path for his future.  He was also cognizant of the dangers and willing to take the risks.   His passion for helping people was apparent as a toddler when he was in daycare and the children would  visit the elderly in a senior apartment building.  He was a favorite because he was very comfortable around many frail humans.  We will miss him SO much, to say the least.  He had discovered his passion to be a paramedic and only needed more time to develop his skills.  Our sadness will be overcome by the joy he gave us as our grandson.

To the Members of the Cape Vincent Volunteer Fire Department and TIERS:

Please accept our sincere condolences in this time of sorrow regarding the tragic death of Mark Davis.

I have known Mark for a few years, and he served as a good EMT for Cape Vincent and TIERS.   I want to send my sympathy to his family and friends . I want everyone to know that Mark was a big brother to everyone who looked up to him and especially his brother Brandon, who is 17 has followed in his brother's footsteps and maybe one day he will be doing what Mark was doing.  Mark died doing what he wanted to do; he died very young and he shouldn't have died.

Mark Davis was the best out there.... Mark: I know you'er in heaven but remember we all are always looking up there and saying why did this happen to you Mark?  Why? So I say this: MARK, YOU WILL BE MISSED AND WILL BE IN EVERYONE'S HEART INCLUDING MINE AS A BROTHER. YOU MADE A LOT OF PEOPLE FEEL SPECIAL. YOU WERE ALWAYS THERE TO DISCUSS WHAT THEY FELT... R.I.P MARK  DAVIS... I WILL MISS U BIG BROTHER.

Love,
David N Thomas

I was a good friend of Mark Davis. He's going to be missed as a relative and a brother and more. It was depressing to hear that Mark's life was cut short. He was there to talk to; either you felt good or bad. His sense of humor and smile will be missed the most. He was a man of his word and a man of his job. I looked up to Mark as a brother very closely. I wish the best of his family and friends, the EMTs on Cape Vincent ambulance and firefighters, and at TIERS.  Mark was a very good friend and brother to me

R.I.P Mark Davis Your angel will be with us forever!!!

I've had the great pleasure in not only working with Mark, but having him as one of my close friends.
He was always there when you needed something and willing to help in any way that he could. I know
that he would want us to jump right back on the rig the next time the tones go off and that's what I did
today. I was a little scared jumping right back into it, but after I got to the hospital, I knew that is what
I needed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark's family, friends, and co-workers.

Joe & Samantha Burke

It is extremely sad to say that on Friday night I lost a friend, a brother, an employee and an all-around good hearted man. Mark would give you the shirt off his back twice over to make sure that someone else was taken care of.

I had the honor of meeting Mark when he applied to Guilfoyle shortly after getting his EMT. He was ambitious and willing to help whenever we needed. He was fast on wit and short to anger, a trait that was Mark. He became a very valuable employee and over the years became a true friend to me, even stopping into my office when he knew that I didn't want to talk to anybody. He would stick his head around the corner and say "Mr. Bova...Is everything going all right today?" and that look on his face was enough to bring a smirk to your face. Everybody liked him.

Shortly before he passed, Mark had asked me to prepare a couple of letters for him for Paramedic School. Unfortunately, those letters didn't have a chance to get written as he was cut down in the prime of his life. Mark died doing what he loved.  His life-long dream was to become an EMT/Paramedic and to help others in his community. Mark had  fortitude, and a heart of gold--the kind of person you would want looking over you saying "You're going to be all right".

I have to give praise to the men and women from Cape Vincent, TIERS, Guilfoyle and everyone else who assisted Mark. I can't imagine working on a fellow co-worker and friend. You should all get a medal of bravery and valor for your work.

Mark would be looking down at us right now and say "Get back to work....because Mr. Bova said so!!" He wouldn't want us to fall behind or give up. It wasn't in Mark's nature. He would persevere, not give up....

All of my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I'm sorry you're gone, Brother. I will see you again in heaven.

Mark Davis was a great guy, he always had a great passion for EMS and it was evident in the classroom at the JCC paramedic program. I met Mark when I was an adjunct instructor for the paramedic program, and my daughter often tagged along with me to class. He always made her and myself laugh, and she and I will never forget the special individual that Mark Davis was. We have lost a wonderful person to a senseless tragedy.

Christine Buckley

The fire & EMS family will never forget you, Mark. We are here through think and thin or like brother and sister. We might not all get along, but we all work well together when we are called on.  This might make some of us get out of fire and EMS and others to think twice about what we are getting into.  There are some of us out there to do this job because we care for other people and just not ourselves.   The fire & EMS family will always think of you when we go on calls.

Thoughts and prayers to all affected by this horrendous tragedy.  A tragic loss such as this knows no borders.  I can say with certainty that many of us from the FF & EMT communities on the north side of the St. Lawrence are in shock to learn of the loss of Mark Davis.

A brilliant mind and a surely outstanding career has been cut short.

A higher calling has been answered......God Bless Mark Davis.

There are not enough words that can explain Mark. I first met Mark when he came back from Florida to get away from violence. He started out as a cook for Applebees, and had no idea what he wanted to do for his career. I was able to convince Mark to apply at Cape Vincent Fire Dept. He started off as a rider, and after being on the ambulance a few times Mark knew that's what he wanted to do. He later became enrolled in the EMT-B class--he was so excited after all of his classes. He took his practical exam and the state written exam. As days went by Mark checked the mail anxiously awaiting his results. He finally received his EMT card in the mail and he had the biggest smile you can imagine. He found out that he received his EMT card and everyone he knew found out as well.

Mark then started running ambulance calls and performing care as an EMT. Shortly after he began working at Guilfoyle. I lived with Mark for a little less than two years with him and his family, and Mark treated my like a brother. We would have our good times and our fights, which normally didn't last long, and then we had the times where he would pick on me--things that big brothers do to little brothers. When I moved out of the house I didn't get to hang out with him as much I did when we lived together, but Mark still picked on me and treated me like his little brother. He is very caring and kind hearted and was the best type of person to be doing what he was doing. He was there when you needed him and would never turn anyone away in need of help.

Mark had a thing for helping people, He walked, talked, and breathed EMS 24/7.  He knew, and was reminded over and over again, that he may die in the line of duty trying to save someone, Mark continued his work as an EMT and went on to Paramedic school to further himself. Mark gave his life while trying to help someone.

This is a very tragic loss, we are all asking ourselves why, There is no real answer to that question. The other day I lost a friend, co-worker, most of all a brother, BUT WE ALL GAINED A HERO!!!!!!!!!!

Mark-I am going to miss you, your presence will never die and you will forever be in my heart! I love you!!!!!

Thank you, Mark for making a bad day better with your smile. You will be missed. To his family, friends and EMT workers: my deepest condolences and know my prayers are with you all.

First, I am most sorry for your loss and cannot begin to appreciate what this is doing to your community of Responders.

I did not know Mark, although I may have met him on one of my visits to your building. I have come to Clayton for one week every summer for over 30 years and I sometimes stop in at your building to say hi and talk about EMS and how you folks do things. I talk to your crews on the street and while they are doing stand-bys.

I am so sorry for your loss and the loss your community does not yet comprehend in the service that David provided and would have provided through his career. As one who trains and nurtures new people in EMS, this strikes me very hard. The loss to his family is immeasurable. The least wecan do is come and bear witness to his value and our loss.

Yours in Service,

MY HEART GOES OUT TO ALL OF THE DAVIS FAMILY, MARKS CO-WORKERS, FRIENDS,  ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF THE COMMUNITIES HE SERVED AND MOST OF THE FAMILY MEMBERS THAT DID THEIR BEST TO GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE.

MARK WAS MY HUSBANDS PARTNER FOR MANY DRUM SHIFTS. THE PICTURE I HAVE POSTED IS ONE OF THE MANY SHIFTS THEY SHARED TOGETHER.  THEY WOULD GET READY TO COOK A MEAL, AND WONDER HOW OR WHAT THEY WERE GOING TO MUSTER UP, MARK SAID HE COULD COOK ANYTHING ON A FORMAN GRILL, AND INDEED HE DID. HE AND HUBBY HAD FULL COURSE MEALS OUT THERE ON DRUM. WE HAVE MANY GOOD MEMORIES OF MARK.

HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED. NO WORDS CAN EXPRESS THE FEELINGS WE ALL HAVE ENDURED THESE LAST FEW DAYS.

WE MAY BE APART BUT YOUR ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS. WE WILL CONTINUE TO LIVE YOUR DREAM WITH YOU IN OUR HEARTS AND PRAYERS.

AND FOR OF THE ANGRY THOUGHTS IN ALL OF US, REMEMBER GOD DOESN'T LIKE UGLY. SO KEEP GOOD THOUGHTS AND KEEP HIS DREAMS ALIVE.

R.I.P MARK "FATBOY" DAVIS

SINCERELY,

TAMMY GUENET ("LITTLE GUY"S WIFE)

In spending 12 years in Cape Vincent, I had the opportunity to meet several of the dedicated volunteer members of the Cape Vincent Fire Dept. I did not have the honor of meeting Mr. Davis, but I have the utmost respect for fellow EMT's and Firefighters. I believe when I send my sincere sympathy to the family/co-workers/friends of Mark Davis I can speak for the entire DCSR Volunteer Fire Dept. Please know that our thoughts are with you and we continue to applaud your department for their dedication and devotion.

One cannot begin to understand and appreciate the sense of horror that has been cast over TI-Rescue, Cape Vincent FD and other area responders as a result of this senseless act of violence.  I lost a good friend and partner about 10 years ago when he was struck and killed by a motor vehicle at a scene.  That, although extremely hard, one can almost begin to understand and come to terms with.

But this situation--this is different.

Please share will all the members of your agencies that my wife, who is also a Paramedic, and I will keep Mr. Davis and his family as well as the TI-Rescue family and all of you in our thoughts and prayers.  This is a time when you need to know you are not alone.  God bless all of you and we pray that you will all find peace.

I didn't know Mark very long. But it was long enough to know what kind of person he was. He was a kind man, and willing to help anyone and everyone who needed it. He was a hard worker, and fully dedicated to his job. I am so sorry this happened, and I will keep his family in my prayers. This is a trying time for everyone, and right now more than ever we must band together. Mark Davis was a great man, and he will be missed by all.

On behalf of the firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians of the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family of Mark Davis and to the people of Cape Vincent. Mark’s memory will live in our hearts forever and I believe he will continue to save lives forever. His ultimate sacrifice will be on the mind of every responder for a very long time and remind us all that we are not invincible. May the grace of God shine down on the Cape Vincent Fire Department and heal the hurt inside us all.

A month or so ago I flew from Syracuse and landed at ABAY FD to meet with a TIERS rig
as a result of a car vs tree motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival, I was met with a trauma
patient who needed immediate transport to a trauma center. I noticed obvious leg injuries
and the Hare traction that had to be adjusted to facilitate movement into the helicopter. As I
was busy doing my assessment and advising the crew about the Hare, a quiet young man
sitting on the bench seat gently tapped me on the shoulder and said "I got it" With some
slight hesitation, I watched as this young man took charge and adjusted the traction on an

open femur fracture flawlessly! I thanked him for an excellent job and loaded the patient and
headed to Syracuse. I have since then praised the crew from TIERS for a job well done and
especially the "unknown EMT" whose response saved valuable time in getting a critical
patient to the trauma center. I recently used that call as a discussion at our staff meeting.
When news quickly spread of the incident in Cape Vincent....it was then that I now knew the
identity of the EMT who was a great assest in the care of the patient.....EMT Mark B. Davis.
The minute I saw his picture I knew it was him. I can only hope there are many more
providers in this world with the compassion and dedication displayed by Mark. Thanks again
Mark!

My thoughts and prayers go out to you Mark, your family and friends, and those who "do
what we do" on a daily basis.

Let me start by sending my sincere condolences to Mark's family, co-workers at Cape Vincent Fire & EMS, TIERS, and Guilfoyle.

I have only known Mark a short time but every time that I saw him he always had a smile on his face. Every time I would see him at the ER no matter what the call he always put a smile on my face as well as everyone else's. Mark will be truly missed by everyone that he came in contact with.

The Firefighters Prayer

God, when I'm called to duty god
wherever flames may rage
give me strength to save a life
whatever be its age

Help me to embrace a little child
before it is too late
or save an older person from
the horror of that fate

Enable me to be alert
to hear the weakest shout
and quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out

I want to fill my calling and
to give the best in me
to guard my neighbor and
protect his property

And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife.

Amen

EMT's Prayer

GOD ... Grant me the ability to give emergency care.
With skillful hands, knowledgeable mind, and tender loving care.
Help me deal with everything, when lives are on the line.
To see the worst, administer aid, and ease a worried mind.
So help me as I go today, accept what fate may be.

God...grant me the ability to give
Emergency care
With skillful hands, knowledgeable mind,
And tender love and care.
Help me deal with everything,
When lives are on the line
To see the worst, administer aid, and
Ease a worried mind.
So help me as I go today
Accept what fate may be.
Touch these hands, use this mind,
Help this EMT.

Dear Mark,

For many people there will be no clear understanding
of why your path was cut tragically short. For those of
us who "walk the walk", while difficult to accept, we
will know that your work here was complete and the
lives you touched are better for it. It will be with a sense of great Honor and Pride that I
and your Brothers from FDNY Pipes and Drums will
Pipe you home....as you hear the pipes...walk proudly
through Heaven's Gates and hear these words from our
Lord: "Well Done Good and Faithful Servant" Ross R. Zastrow, EMT-P
Central Orleans Volunteer Ambulance Albion, NY Senior EMS Representative NYS Department of Health

Please extend my deepest condolences to Mr Davis' family and co-workers.

Tara Jones, EMT-Intermediate
Becket, Massachusetts EMS

This world of EMS is not so large, it is very small.  Waves of an EMS tragedy rock between coasts of this great nation.  I did not know Mr. Davis in any way, but the loss of any in the EMS family still brings tears to my eyes.  You and whomever else feels the effects of this horrendous event have my deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences.

To quote one of my Paramedic Instructors, "God has a special place in his house for EMTs, Firefighters, and Police.  He has sympathy for those who suffer so that others may live in peace."

This article will be brought to the attention of my class this Thursday evening so they can see what great respect, honor, privilege, and dedication we EMTs really do have.  My God Bless you, yours, and Mr. Davis.

Respectfully Yours,

Alan Michael Cannon, Iowa Paramedic Specialist, PS 18-105-02
Clear Lake, Iowa

Mark was my nephew. I have been reading all the tribute's to Mark from people who cared so much for him and it was because Mark always cared so much. I know he was very proud to be an EMT and help people which he did with great pride.

This page and the kindness of the people who have contributed to it will help the family through this time. I want to thank you for that. I will always remember Mark as a little boy with curly black hair ready with his smile and a warm hug. He kept his ready smile and warm hug as he grew to manhood. My mother used to say Mark was a special little boy and I know she was there to welcome him home on that fateful night.

I believe God has a reason for everything. For Mark it was to touch many hearts with his love and caring nature. He will never be forgotten and "Always in our Hearts".

I love you Mark

To All My Brothers and Sisters

Hi, I am Kelly Wilhelm with Rockwell Rural Vol. Fire Dept in North Carolina. I just learned last night of the tragic death of Mark Davis from my Aunt Liz in Clayton.

I would like to, on the behalf of my fire department, wish each and everyone at your Department, Mark's parents and friends our deepest sympathy and prayers.  I know how hard this is on all of you, because we lost two firemen in March, 2008 in a big fire in Salibury, North Carolina. I hope and pray that things like this don't happen again and that we can possibly learn from them when it does.

I know we go through classes and training but nothing can every prepare us for the death of a brother or
sister.  Even though we are 800+ miles away from each other, if there is anything I or my department can do, please feel free to contact me.

Again I am so sorry for all of you IN YOUR loss. Even though I did not know Mark, I know he loved what he was doing, because it takes a special person to do what we do.

And GOD said: " GREATER LOVE HAS NO ONE THAN THIS, THAT HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE
FOR HIS FRIENDS "  John 15:13

To the family of Mark Davis :

On behalf of myself and the faculty of the Bassett / Cobleskill  paramedic program may we extend our sincere condolences for your loss .

As paramedic instructors, we mourn the loss of one who showed such  promise; truly a rising star.
As fellow EMS providers, we mourn the loss of a comrade who could have eased the suffering of so many others had his life not been regrettably cut short. As a father, I can only imagine the pain that you are suffering after  the loss of a son who was so filled with hope and promise; my prayers  are with you .

We, the EMS community, are thankful for the short time we knew Mark and for the love that he brought to his family, friends, patients and fellow EMS providers . Know that the flags at the Western Turnpike Rescue Squad, Albany, New  York, and the flags of other rescue squads across the state are flying at half mast as we honor the memory of Mark .

May our heartfelt sympathy help to sustain you through these difficult  times.

I have recently become an EMT-B and I am so saddened to hear of this.  My heart goes out to his crew and family members.  I can not believe that something like this can happen. We go out there to save lives and instead...

I am writing to send my thoughts on this terrible news and to say that I am truly sorry for your loss.  I will be mailing a donation in his honor to the fire department.  I never imagined that rescuing civilians can turn so tragic.  I guess when we are taught about scene safety for yourself and crew, I will look at it in a totally different perspective from now on.

Once again my thoughts and prayers are with all of Mark's friends and  family. I hope that something like this never happens again anywhere.

Sincerely,

MaryJo Iacono EMTB

We at Caguas EMS Station are with you in your loss. It is always devastating to lose a brother EMT.

Although we are some miles and an ocean--and then some--apart, we know what it is to lose a family member...yes we all family, an extended one....

Dear Lord: We may be sad now for a tragic ending of Mark's life, but ready to celebrate his memories. I believe there is a lesson in all of it... Please give us the wisdom to learn what that wish is that You have laid for us. Give all of Mark's families hope and reassurance that we will all meet again, and let's not forget his laughter. So say we all.
