EMS NOTES:
The new ambulance unloading area is fully covered from rain and snow.
The new E.D. Nurse Manager is a 22-year Firefighter/Paramedic from the Niagara Falls area.
The South nurse's station will operate from 11am to 11 pm when the majority of patients are seen in the ED; the North nurse's station will operate around the clock.
The first room inside the Ambulance Entrance doors is designed to hold intoxicated or otherwise disruptive patients who may require calming time or sedation before being let into the ED itself.
The ED now has it's own X-ray and CT rooms with bedside units also used.
One room is specially equipped as a Resuscitation Room for cardiac and/or respiratory arrest patients.
Three complete Triage exam rooms and an area for treating non-emergency illnesses and injuries will lessen the load on the ED staff and doctors.
Five lockable and observable rooms allow mental health emergency patients to be held safely and securely away from other patient areas. There are two "flex" rooms available for overflow.
In case of chemical or other contamination, a heated Decon[tamination] Shower is inside the building but with an outside entrance. Once they are cleaned to safe levels, patients (and providers, if needed), will then enter the ED through an inside door.
Special rooms include an OB-GYN room with an attached restroom, and a Family Room away from the busy part of the department for families' privacy.
The two negative pressure rooms also have a negative pressure work room connecting them, allowing staff to go between the two rooms when patients with TB, SARS or other illnesses are isolated. There is also a restroom in one NP room for relatives, police or corrections officers who have accompanied the patient.
There are staff work areas throughout the ED, and three Medications rooms to lessen walking distances for nurses and doctors as much as possible.
