But, the other goal of the Thousand Islands EMS Training Academy is to provide the knowledge and the skills to you--teacher, student, florist, mechanic, clerk, nurse, executive, construction worker, housewife, retired person--so that when the time comes for action, you'll know what to do, and you'll be able to do it with confidence.

Using just your own body, you can keep someone alive for the long minutes that it can take for help to arrive. You should learn the simple steps needed to:

  • Perform Rescue Breathing in case of heart attack, respiratory arrest, drowning or electrical shock

  • Perform Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), to keep a heart pumping blood in an emergency

  • Save a choking victim using the Heimlich Maneuver and other methods

  • Control moderate and severe bleeding from accidents, cuts and other injuries

  • Recognize the signs of Shock and help victims simply and quickly

  • Help an accident victim to help prevent further injury

  • Treat traumatic injuries until help arrives.

CPR CARD UPDATES OFFERED NOW

All TIERS CPR-certified personnel are now able to update their cards to meet the newly-adopted American Heart Association CPR guidelines, say Rolly Churchill, TIERS Director. "Everyone should do this as soon as possible. It only takes about 20 minutes to watch the video and pass a ten-question test."

NOTE:  This does not count as a card recertification. Everyone needs to check the expiration date on their card and sign up for a recertification class before their card expires.

AED Trainer

The Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), gives first responders, EMTs, and now the general public a valuable tool to help save a life in the event of a cardiac emergency. When its used correctly, an AED reads the heart's rhythm and determines if the AED can be used to correct the heartbeat.

At the same time, the AED gives loud verbal instructions to the operator on what the machine is doing ("ANALYZING HEART RHYTHM"), and what rescuers are to do ("DO NOT TOUCH PATIENT" or "START CPR").

As easy as is sounds, there is still training needed to apply and use the device. Thousand Islands EMS Training Academy has a Lifepak 500T Training System to allow hands-on learning and skills practice whenever it's needed.
